ParticipantFor the newer guys…
Gotta be very, very careful with the napper near baseboards….mine never saw one yet it didn’t try to tangle with. It will do damage to anything it may touch…just a word of warning.

ParticipantI have burnished many, many floors in the past. It is a high speed buffer running anywhere from 1,200-2,000 rpm +/-… You better be knowledgeable in hard floor maintenance though…it is best described under more specialized floor maintenance services. You most probably do not really want to get into this, unless you wish to expand into other hard floor maintenance services. We do a couple of vct floors but only strip once a year and apply high solids wax in a couple of very small areas.
Hope this helps.

ParticipantWe would definitely like to hear more.

ParticipantI didn’t know where to place this, but under Heaven’s Best is as good as any.
We have a free subscription to Insight of the Day and this came through and moved my spirit…perhaps someone else may be inspired as well.

Participant16 pads per average job??? At 2-3jobs a day someone is washing a lot of pads in the afternoon and evening Kemo Sabe…happy as a clam in the sand that we only generate 6-9 pads per job. Two to three loads each night.

ParticipantWith pre-spraying with FAE, and then 101, and then buffing, I agree with Ron, the time is extended somewhat, but is the carpet then dry in 1 hour?

ParticipantI learned my SM lesson several years ago…cost me the $99 and then a few calls and one customer. They have an internal arbiter to settle disputes…they won, and I lost a whole $12…I told them, at the time something like “please remove me from your list”. They did, reluctantly.
In our rural area, there are not many calls from them in any event and to me it is not worth the time, money and mental frustrations to deal with them. In a more sophisticated metropolitan area, I think SM may be more useful…
Those that are using them successfully…great!!!!!!! I heard the testimonies at LV and thought that maybe my experience was just due to me and my area or my attitude…could be. I just choose not to compete with any competitors in the SM marketplace for any jobs….and then pay for the privilege.

ParticipantGreg,
Speak to those who know..Barry and Jim…they KNOW!!! For the greater metropolitan D.C. area anyway. Only your competition would know for your specific geographical area. Personally, I would bet that the D.C. pages would work very well in almost any metropolitan area.
Call Jim and Barry…they are very helpful and knowledgeable.

ParticipantGrant,
Great idea and fantastic job. You received some 30+ jobs from your emails…how many emails generated that business? You didn’t send out 1,300 emails did you?
Just getting an idea of the rate of return…I might have missed it in the posting.
Great job…I will copy here…But I will have to do something for those who already refer to me…gotta figure out something special for them I think.

ParticipantRon,
Great idea for the state owners to perhaps help in coordinating this. Once one has broken the ground, so to speak, then the other states could piggyback off that effort or share and then the city owners could share. It could become more regional in nature and have a more
local
feel.
Many of us neither have the expertise to crate a nice webpage nor have the funds…but can clean very, very well…

ParticipantI agree Gary…I usually find what I need between HD-Lowes. Lately though I discovered a farmers hardware store in Lancaster county….they remind me of Vonnegut’s in Indianapolis when I was a kid. The writer, Kurt Vonnegut was born and raised in Indy and his family owned a number of hardware stores that were awesome. They had everything and one was caddy corner to my dad’s office. I got spoiled by that store…nothing had ever measured up until I discovered Paul B Zimmerman’s.
I challenge everyone to locate one of these places. They service the needs of the farmer/rancher and have everything you can imagine in there and service is off the charts. They treat me like family.

ParticipantI think I would rather go head on against Chem Dry as a competitor in the marketplace than the multitude of DIY machines that HD and Loews, Penney’s. Sears and WalMart sell…directly to the public for the price of cleaning 3-4 rooms. Just as with Chem Dry, we get to clean up after them as well. By the way, the local Lowe’s rents Rinse n’Vacs for the DIYer…
Personally, I could care less about the supposed competition and have never given them much notice. Have seen their ads once in a while…their pricing has not affected me at all. I chuckle or laugh at most of the ads I have seen, since we have been the beneficiary of their past customers…each and every one of them.

ParticipantGreg,
Does your insurance cover any messes or accidents? One of the really great aspects of the HB dyeing process we witnessed was that one could undo whatever they did, until satisfied with the color, then set the color. Maybe I misunderstood…
