ParticipantHaving not gone through any repair training at corporate, other than at Las Vegas, I personally would not repair with what I learned and did in LV. It piqued my interest, not prepared me for repairs.
Wish you the best Evan.

ParticipantEvan,
You might look into attending a repair class by IICRC. My wife and son attended and I saw a repair on berber they brought home and could not find from above, only on the backside…
Our son just received his IICRC Certification and is using it now. Will pay for itself 2-3 jobs…the term KA CHING comes to mind.
I wish we had done this several years ago!!!!
Thanks Greg Miller

ParticipantWe tried them when we first started and had the same experience…tire kickers is a good description. Then the thought occurred to me: Was the competition calling just to play with us…and costing me $12/call? Competition calls all the time and have not answered my phone for any UNKNOWN caller for years…I always answer if they have a phone number.
Our first postcard sent out is a hit, got business and many inquiries about repair work…Thanks Greg.
We are finishing another postcard this weekend. It will replace our reminder letter and give an awesome shot from Hubble to boot… We have already picked out the Christmas Card/Postcard….simple, yet awesome!
We will pick out something special for our JAN-FEB business special.
Thanks Hubble!!!

ParticipantThere is an immutable Law of the Universe called the Law of Averages, or The Law of Diminishing Returns or something like that.
I think in the carpet cleaning business it kicks in when you are cleaning a carpet or area rug and it falls apart, or something terrible happens that can get in your pocket for a lot of money….at that moment, when you say oops!
You might wish that you had not taken that job for $100/hr or $500/hr…
I have turned down jobs where there is terrible cat urine and feces in and on the carpet and pad…in a rental. I have turned down cleaning $35k oriental rug cleaning jobs…my knowledge/skills/risk and reward do not measure up… others may, but not mine.
Just my tolerance for risk-reward.
But then again, if I was charging and getting $100/hr and say an average of 5 hours work a day, 50 weeks a year and grossing say $225k-$250k /year, then I might take the risks. We are not there and not able to at this time…we exercise caution.

ParticipantAmen!!!!
A lady I cleaned for had the MOST trashed carpet in the county…then she hit the big time, married a plant manager and moved into an all but brand new $475k home with all but white carpeting throughout…she had me clean it before they moved in. I warned her about keeping it clean….we shall see. It has been 3 months and she is due for a call.
Thanks for the reminder…good way to get more business…all on the current.
Beats paying for new customers.

ParticipantGreg,
We just sent out nearly 1,000 postcards to all of our active customers announcing the repair services offered. The cards just hit them yesterday and today… don’t really expect a lot from them, but we are going to continue our postcard campaign indefinitely…
The postcard had a photo from Hubble on the front with ANOTHER OF HEAVEN’S BEST in gold lettering across the top and it was of a Spiral Galaxy…Hard to look at and then pitch in the trash. Four color, both sides, with the announcement of additional services on the reverse. Ordered 1500 to give away to future customers or neighbors or referrals, etc.
We will see how it goes.
Thanks Greg and Ammon for the little nudge, I now have to get trained.

ParticipantWe feel for you…we are sending out mailings to local property management operations…bigger and better payoff than a national management group, that may have a few outlets around town…just our opinion..
Thanks for the warning.
Dave
P.S.- you might talk to the store managers.they may intercede for you.

ParticipantJust heard from wife in Pittsburgh area class for repair….she says it is awesome…learning a lot and is sold! Son will take IICRC test.

ParticipantWe got into hard floor cleaning, tile, linoleum, etc, since the customer needs it and many of the carpet cleaning competitors offer as well. It is a deal breaker in many cases. If we can do the job, we do incorporate into the overall deal. Quoting four large areas for tile cleaning and area rug cleaning with a local day care center. vct cleaning with HS is the same as t & G cleaning, except easier.
My 2 cents worth…

ParticipantWould you use this brush to loosen soil, etc, then follow with the pad? Kind of like using the BBC and then follow-up with a woven turf? That sounds like a good combination.
Thanks for the info and idea.

ParticipantThanks Greg,
My son and wife are going to the class and I am having him take the IICRC exam for certification. This will make our numbers go north for sure…
Thanks again.
DaveBTW-I asked if my wife could just audit the class for free and they said no problem and will even provide lunch for her…
pacheco
ParticipantThanks Greg. My son is registered and wife can audit for free…while I stay home and pay for it…Thanks a lot…Dave

ParticipantWe began our business in July and used Val Pak for 4 months until we got the YB/YP out into the world….barely got our money back but kept the customers we got…never, ever would we ever use again. Money better spent in local Penny Savers or rag that goes to all homes in a Zip Code.
That being said, if they just came into my area and I had the opportunity to use them for a couple of months, I might give it a try. To the population, it will be a novelty, until they realize that it is used mainly for pizzas and other goodies…
Most folks here just pitch the blue envelope…I do as well, after I peruse it for the competitors to see how low they are going….
Just our 2 cents worth…
