Ok, got two questions. First, anyone have any tips for cleaning distressed hardwood when it comes to preventing splintering of the wood? Have had this issue with one distressed floor that we may try and clean again this week.

Second, anyone ever have a white powder appear when they are cleaning hardwood? My guys had this happen on this same distressed hardwood floor. They said the powder appeared when the floor was wet and they could only get it to go away when they got the floor dry. Floor also looked worse after we cleaned it (not shiny at all). Wondering if the distressed wood is maybe waxed? This is a very nice new construction house (built in last 3-5 yrs).

Any thoughts appreciated. For cleaning, we only used the wood floor cleaner (white/red pads). Didn’t use wax if that helps.

Hi, sounds like wax to me. For every wood floor job, I always give an estimate first. When I give an estimate, I test it with a mild floor stripping solution pre-mixed in a spray bottle I keep in the van and a white cloth. I mist the stripper on a small area, wait a few minutes, wipe off, spray with the multiple surface cleaner to rinse and dry with a microfiber cloth. If there is wax build up, you and the customer will see a big difference where the wax is and where it’s not. I charge at least 2x to 3x more for stripping than just cleaning the floor per sq. ft. and include a free bottle of our cleaner in the deal.
