If you need to replace the motor on the Oreck stair buffer, buy the motor from the company and install it yourself. It saved me $100 in labor by not having the Oreck repair shop do it.

Check the relay when installing a new motor and install a new one if needed. Mine was bad and burned my motor up.

    What part is the relay?

I have sent mine in 3 times to Oreck because it was under warranty. They replaced the motor each time, but I’m not sure they replaced the relay.

Now it’s not under warranty and the motor burned out again. 4 times in 1 year.

(Edit: The oreckcommercial.com website says that the motor has a 5 year warranty)

I don’t see the motor under the Stair Buffer category.

Replace the relay. It is cheap compared to a motor. I assume that was the cause of my 4 motors shorting out. Since changing it I have had no other issues. The motor is not in the company store, call John or Adam and they will give you the number. Note: if you change the motor yourself, the orbiting weight on the motor has opposite threads on it. Righty tighty-lefty loosey is normal. This has a lefty tighty- righty loosey. You may have to put the plate in a vise and then turn the shaft with a screwdriver to get them apart.

How long ago did you replace the relay?

Every time Oreck replaced the motor, it would last anywhere from 2 steps to 10 sets of stairs.

    Loren,
    Great info! Thanks!
The motor on my original stair buffer that is probably 8+ years old finally gave up. Certainly worth $189 to have a spare. I bought a new buffer less than a year ago and it seems to be made much better than my original. Another problem I have with the older buffers is a rattle develops at the pivot joint of the handle. The cradle and clamp bracket wears out, leaving a sloppy joint that allows for the rattle. Does anyone have a nice fix for this? Another thought I had for the motors going out so fast. Don’t put too much pressure down on the buffer while cleaning. You may be over working the motor.

Michael: Sounds like the same issue I had. Try replacing the relay. they are cheap compared to a motor. I bought a new motor, had a dealer install it and it still occurred. Then I replaced he motor and relay early last fall. Since then I have had no issues with the Oreck, no electrical odor. I have not changed anything else in my process. Before then I had motors burn out in a week to 6 months. They would start to have a slight electrical odor and then slowly get smellier until one day there was a puff of smoke out of it. After a cool down they would run only for short periods of time until it completely blew. Luckily the last 2 motors were under warrantee, but I was concerned the home office or Oreck thought they were abused and wouldn’t honor the warrantee. I even sent the last ones in for evaluation. I was totally baffled as I even had a dealer do the replacement labor and it still burned out. No excessive pressure or anything, no over loading or over working it. There is a lot of vibration with these units and the relay is only plastic with the electrical contacts inside it. The connectors were totally loose and wiggled a lot. Brian, I believe there are tensioning springs, and maybe even nylon bushings, that are supposed to be in the area where the handle attaches to eliminate the looseness and rattling. It has been a while and I can’t remember those details. Check the exploded view of the unit in the manual or on the internet.
