Just a reminder one of the key components of our cleaning process when you’re selling our process is the amount of safe agitation we have when we clean (remember the 4 components of cleaning-Cleaning agent, Dwell Time, Heat, and AGITATION). The only agitation steam cleaners have is the PSI, the “scrubbing” of a wand if they make more than one pass, and maybe a carpet rake if they even own one and use it to agitate in their pre-spray. I bring this up because my employees were cleaning for a new customer last week and were only cleaning the stairs and a small area rug. Due to less than ideal parking situation (see blocks away), they elected to just use the stair buffer to clean both the stairs and the rug since the rug didn’t appear to be heavily soiled and wasn’t too large. In cleaning the rug (after vacuuming), one of my employees was getting up a ton of dog hair and asked the customer if they had a dog as he hadn’t seen one. She said they had had a dog, but had to put it down a few years ago and asked why. He showed her the amount of hair he was getting up (and it was hair, not wool fibers). She was amazed b/c they had had that rug cleaned by steam cleaners at least once since the dog’s death, and she then asked if the steam cleaners actually did any cleaning!

In regards to agitation in HWE think about how often you need to agitate upholstery with a brush in order to clean it effectively. I rarely can get upholstery clean without using the brush.

Excellent point Dave. I always charge more when they have animals. I call it the animal hair removal charge. Because I usually have to vacuum after I buff. When possible I like to show the customer what their vacuum & or the last steam cleaner didn’t get. All the hair balls sitting on top of the carpet. That confirms what I explained to them in the beginning when they ask “What is this animal hair removal charge?”
