We use to do newspaper ads in the spring and fall every year. We have not done them for the last 2-3 years because it became very expensive. The ads did produce for us but most of what they produced was undesirable work. We would advertise 400 Sq ft for $99. Almost all of the jobs we did were just $99 and crappy work.

I advertised in my local paper (small town of 10,000 pop.) faithfully for the first 4 years in business. I advertised a higher price than Mr. Ferris and landed many higher dollar volume quality jobs. 8 years later with over 800 customers in this small town alone, I no longer advertise and continue to grow. Advertising is like investing money in a low risk money market. Once you make the investment, your money continues to work for you. To manage your investment, you need to send yearly reminders while continuing to do great work. Always ask your customers where they work and let them know you also offer commercial cleaning. Give them a few business cards and ask them to spread your name around to their friends and co-workers. The disadvantage to advertising is the cost and the feeling that you need to offer a special. Do you need to offer a special? I always did but I don’t think it is mandatory. I think the key is to not try to low-ball but rather keep your name in front of your customers. The majority of newspaper readers are people that are over 50. They are the ones you want as customers. They have money and friends with money.
