I know that Heavensbest.com links to everyone’s website, but I’m curious if any other operators are interested in linking to each other via a search list….

My thinking is that a large factor in your ranking is the number of websites that link to you. What if we (on our individual sites) all link to each other? That could in theory bump all of our sites up…..

Anyone interested? I don’t mind writing the code for a list in alphabetical order by state if I can get everyone’s info. It would basically be a matter of copying and pasting the information to a page on your site.

I’ve had some similar thoughts on this, and I’m still of the opinion that backlinks do have some value, even with a link exchange. I also considered the possibility of getting a link from one operator, and giving a link to a different operator, what’s known as a two-way exchange. Links done in this way may have more value, but also require more effort and coordination.

If it helps everyone involved, no reason not to do it in my opinion. Great idea.

Links pointing to your site play a big part in determining your rankings within the search engines but a link exchange is not helpful and in some cases can actually result in a penalty being applied to your site. The reason Google does this is to stop website owners from trying to game their algorithm by trading links with other website owners. Link exchanges were very effective pre 2005 or so but from that point on no benefit and if done in large scale can result in a 99 penalty being applied to your site.

Google has in excess of 1,000 phd computer science majors working for them to stop link spam so you really need to understand what your doing before acting as it is very easy to do more harm then good.

Greg I follow what you are saying. I’ve read from Google’s webmaster tools and several respected sources in the industry and it’s a fine line. I believe if done correctly-with relevance it works…..if you just have a page with a bunch of random links…not so much.

Google’s very own propaganda minister (aka Matt Cutts) is great at disinformation. The part about relevancy is correct but what that is meant for is linking to an authority site in your niche. For example if I own a auto repair shop that specializes in Toyota then Google would expect to see links going back and forth between the two sites but a carpet cleaning company that serves Boston linking to a dozen other carpet cleaners around the country does not fit that same authority requirement. Keep in mind that every page on Google has an internal page rank score of 0 thru 10 and most sites are 1 to 3 in terms of page rank but authority sites average more like 5 to 8 in page rank and that is where the value of the backlink comes from. Do not confuse page rank with ranking of your site within Google as they are not the same.
