I have been thinking about the Ipad and using it as a scheduler and integrating it with software and a mobil printer to do estimates/quotes and invoices. Math errors would be eliminated and I could download everything to the desktop on a daily basis. Is anyone doing this at this time. Thoughts?

I am looking to do the same thing by years end. I believe Monster would be the scheduler service and I also believe it is compatible with Quick Books. I have yet to look into pricing and feasibility of putting printers in my trucks.

So, I have a printer in one of my vans and have Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ tablets that are 3G in both of my vans. Anymore, we rarely use the printer. What I would recommend is getting a tablet thru your cell phone carrier that is 3/4G (i.e can connect to their actual cell network instead of just wifi capable ). For my plan, this only costs an extra $10/month per tablet and just uses my shared data when connected. This $10 doesn’t include initial tablet cost, but I recently got my 2nd tablet for FREE thru verizon promo, so keep your eyes out for deals. I have multiple smartphones plus the 2 tablets on my plan and NEVER come close to reaching my 4Gb max on my plan. With a tablet, you can run the service monster program (which we use and I do like) or possibly Quickbooks if you use that for your invoicing. I think QB has mobile options, but I’m not positive. Service monster does tie into quickbooks for downloading your invoices and payments if you’re not familiar with it. We also now have card readers that we can attach to the tablets for running credit cards. I fell this is much more professional (and safer) than using smartphones, especially if you have employees. You can create an estimate/invoice on the spot and email it to the customer right there from your tablet program of choice if you want. We email all invoices now when possible, which is 99% of the time and gives us a nice email database for marketing if we so choose. Yes, having the printer as an option is nice, but I really think it is more of a pain than anything else. Instead of a printer, I would recommend just carrying around a bunch of blank invoices that you can hand write if someone doesn’t want to give you their email address. Much easier, doesn’t take up room in the van, and costs less. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the information Dave. Great explanation. I don’t use service monster but do use QB. I’ll have to check QB for mobile options.
