In the last 6 months I have canceled 3 out of the 6 phone books I was in. I am thinking of trying the HB internet advertising. Has any one started this & what are your thoughts?
January 17, 2011 at 3:41 am #153753AnonymousGuestYou cannot go wrong advertising on the internet. Phone books are becomming obsolete in many arears especially large metro areas as more and more consumers are using the internet. I canceled all of my yellow page books last year and I strictly use the net as my main channel of marketing.

This may sound a bit silly, but these questions come to mind…You are still in the phone book, just not in a display ad correct?
In dropping yellow page advertising, did you loose any business? If so, how much did you loose?
I ask these questions because there are operators that are very cautious about dropping the yellow pages completely (yet).

Your questions are not silly at all. I was in four Verizon Yellow Page Books from Nov 2008 thru Nov 2009. Im a fanatic when it comes to tracking my advertising and I can tell you in the years time I only received 8 jobs from the yellow pages!! As you know, yellow pages are very expensive even if one was to go with a simple business card size ad. Given the extremely poor ROI I swore off the yellow page ads for good. It didnt help that the service I recieved from the Verizon sales reps was terrible. I really didnt have any business from the yellow pages per se so there was no business to loose. You are correct, I am still in the yellow pages with a free listing with the name of the business and telephone number. I know there are operators who may feel the expense of advertising in the yellow pages is “a cost of doing business” and are cautious about dropping them all together, however, I personally believe they can get a much larger bang for their buck if they were to move those dollars in to other channels including the internet. I am a strong proponent of internet marketing. So much so that 85% of my entire 2011 advertising budget is geared towards the internet!! Be well.

January 20, 2011 at 3:15 am #153757AnonymousInactiveI am also doing away with all my yellow page advertising, except one small book in only one of my areas where I do get a fair amount of business from.
When I ask how my NEW customers how they heard about me, it’s almost always the internet. I was paying $500 per month for internet advertising but now have switched companies and am paying $295 per month. As soon as my contract expires, I will do it on my own. I have someone who knows how to do it and she will show me. (She used to do it for a living) She said it would take an hour to set up and about half an hour a week to monitor.
Right now, I have seven phone books on the corner of my desk, three that are 3 inches thick. They cover all my areas but if I need a phone number for something, I use the internet.
Good luck and don’t let the yellow page sales person say you HAVE to be in the books. Even if I have to pay to have a line listing, I won’t do it.
They need me more than I need them.

To answer your questions. I’m still in 3 books & I Seldom get calls from any of them & when i do it ‘s usually some body price shopping looking for the cheapest price. I have not lost any business from dropping the 3 that i did. Thanks for your input.January 21, 2011 at 1:34 am #153759UtaatuParticipantLew, $295.00 a month? What is your ROI? I was paying around $900.00 a year for the six books & have always at least broke even. & the jobs i did get from the books i could have passed on. Dirty,Dirty,Dirty.
January 22, 2011 at 3:09 am #153760AnonymousInactiveThe $295 per month is for my internet advertising (Google etc) My areas cover two different counties, (Palm Springs Ca area and Hi-Desert area) on the border of two of them. In one of the phone books there are about 70 carpet cleaning companies. No way to compete with the full page ads. But …I’m the ONLY carpet cleaner for two of the Chambers of Commerce.
Bottom line is in my opinion in my areas the yellow pages are going to be a thing of the past.

January 24, 2011 at 11:41 pm #153763AnonymousInactivewell i m planning on leanning most of my advertising to the internet, might be somewhat bold, but i feel it is time.most of yellowpage adds are smaller jobs, and they want cheap service.there are a few oher reasons to but those are the swayers.im sure the differance can be had on the internet.
January 28, 2011 at 4:06 am #153764Linda OrrKeymasterI tried the internet a couple years ago and got absolutely zero. From what I have read maybe it is time to try again and a new tactic. I like the Heaven’s Best web sight offer and plan to try that.
February 4, 2011 at 11:06 pm #153765AnonymousInactiveIts scarey for me just drop the phone books but I’m going to reduce the size of my adds for now I have a meeting with my yellow page person on tuesday any Ideas, is this a good thing or not ?
February 4, 2011 at 11:27 pm #153766AnonymousGuestIf you are apprehensive in doing away with the yellow pages then reducing the size of your ad is a good start and should lower your expense as well. Any idea what your return rate is on your yellow page ads? Your return on your investment will tell you what you should do when it comes to the yellow pages. Have you done internet marketing/advertising?
