I have a customer with a 3 year old spotter bottle with (according to her) black stuff in it. Customer was having trouble getting the product out of the bottle so she took the top off. She did get some of it on the carpet before she took off the top. I am going there tomorrow to clean it up and will get the bottle from her. Was there any answer to what was causing this? I did a search on this and see the topic has come up before but didn’t see any response on what was happening.

    Thanks,
    Rick

My only thought is mold, but would it be able to grow among those chemicals.

Someone could have used the bottle for something else. It happens at our house all the time. Sounds like someone tried to make salad dressing with one of our chemicals the other day. There could be an infinite possibilities to look at. I have found an old bottle of spotter that was 9 years old and it was still clear. It just lost the orange scent from age. One thing that could have happened is that you filled it from your sprayer on the job. If so did you have a cherry almond deodorizer mixed or something else mixed with it. Even then it would be to hard to figure out. My guess is the husband used the bottle for something and did not fess up to it. That is what I would do and then blame the cleaner or the kids.

Thanks for the ideas on the spotter. It definetly has some kind of black stuff in the solution and the tube going to the sprayer. Of course the customer says they didn’t do any thing to the bottle/product, but as we all know, customers don’t always tell us every thing! That said, I have known these folks for a long time and believe what they are telling me. I’m sure the bottle was mixed from the spotter solution supplied by HB. Should we be putting an expiration date on the spotters if the shelf life is 2 years mixed?

I have had several customers here lately with the same problem. I have seen all the way from little black spots to nickel sized floating black stuff. I’m guessing it’s mold. How it got there is anyone’s guess. Could our funnel have a contaminant in it when we fill the bottle? Could the hose we use to add water to our concentrate have something on it that would cause this? Would a spec of orange deodorizer (it has a mildicide) help? Should we have a shelf life (best used by) date on it. We’d have to write it on ourselves . . . maybe a 12-24 month expiration like Rick said. Maybe smaller bottles like 20 oz. so they get used faster.

Just a few thoughts. This problem is out there and probably doesn’t make us look real good. Anyone else been seeing this?

I have had the same “black snot” as I call it floating in my spotters also. I try not to fill too many of them and that helps eliminate the shelf time. However, I have had them floating around in the gallon 101 containers if I mix up several containers and do not get them used up within a month. I reported this to corporate a year or more ago and they indicated at that time they thought it was residue that was not rinsed out of the drum by the supplier when they filled the drum.

My guess is that the black stuff could be a mold growth. I have not done this yet, but my plan is to add some orange deodorizer to my spotters. I believe OD helps to prevent mold growth, therefor, reducing or eleminating this problem. Obviously testing results will be months from now so please be patient!!

I’ve seen this before, and I came to the same conclusion. It’s Mold.
I haven’t seen this problem since I started adding #124 to the spotters.

We saw this some years ago with several bottles that were mixed and not used for some months…I think that if the solutions are used regularly, there should be no problem, but a slimy mold coming out of a bottle that a customer purchased would not be good and should get a reply regarding prevention of some kind from corporate.

    just a thought..
