So others don’t repeat the bomb of the cursed advertising salesman. What did you advertise in that was a total waste of money (name names and form of advertising) and why do you feel it went so bad?
One way to avoid bad advertising is to say “I have to clear this with the home office.” Never get trapped in to the “you have to buy it now to get the great deal. Or, this deal is only good until the end of the day,” etc. You will not regret turning these down.

They are very unethical in their practices as well. I have talked to other businesses that have dealt with them and had similar problems that I did. STAY AWAY! 👿
April 22, 2007 at 1:39 am #149643CJonesParticipantGood one Danbo, any kind of register tape advertising is a total complete ripoff. I have tried that before in other businesses & have also witness others waste a lot of money! And, anytime, anyplace, anyone tells me that I must make a decision NOW to take advantage of the great offer….. my automatic answer is: NO! If it’s so great, then it’ll be there tomorrow, or next week. These types of salesmen are the worst, and they get totally confused when you tell them: “Well, if I can’t have time to think about this, then my answer is NO”. They really don’t know what to do at that point, and often begin making the conversation personal – like you have some kind of problem! I’ve walked many a time – car sales, health clubs, real estate, etc. Also tried a community newsletter one time – it was a waste. Make as big a bang as possible to your target market for the least cost!!!
April 22, 2007 at 2:03 am #149644HB2003ParticipantRight on about the decision needs to be NOW thing. There is a company out there that sales ad space for Movie Theater brochures. They always try that pressure type of sales technique….

April 24, 2007 at 5:34 am #149646Gary SpearParticipantca130 what size ad do you do. we have the best luck with the yellow pages but we do 1/2 page ads
April 24, 2007 at 6:39 am #149647HBplantcityflaParticipantArea maps. A company called EU Mapping or (Eddies Uptown Mapping). Tried them for 1 year. Fairly small investment but very poor results(none). Also Bowling League Ads. Nothing. Pretty dumb mistakes but I have learned alot since then. I have made a commitment to myself that I will never buy into anything that does not produce direct sales. Other than some (being very picky), intrusive media.
May 1, 2007 at 10:36 pm #149648Bwaite77ParticipantI typically run dollar bill size ads, and get good results.
Most of the CC’s in my town run 1/2 page ads.
Personally I think their wasting their money on the larger space.AND if you are in VERIZON’s territory, zerox and document everything.
In Texas, they are the worst directory to run ads with.
Out of 7 years, they have only gotten my ad right 3 times.
And when I have a problem with them, it takes 6-10 months to get the adjustment on price. If I ever give another dollar to Verizon, it will be for a line listing only.
May 2, 2007 at 5:54 am #149649HBplantcityflaParticipantIn invested in some adobe illustrator software. Let me tell you, with all the new ad templates, I am really excited. I am very computer literate, but do not know AI very well. I have been able though to make my ad exactly the way that I want it without worrying about if YP or other print advertisers are going to mess it up. It is nearly impossible for them to mess up a camera ready ad. Also, alot less communication needs to take place. Granted too, I also ask them for a proof just to be sure.
May 2, 2007 at 6:44 am #149650AnonymousInactiveCorporate very much needs to have future ads created in both Illustrator and Photoshop (with layers). 😥
May 2, 2007 at 9:04 pm #149651GA18ParticipantGuys,
For what it is worth, you can request that a proof of any ad be emailed to you before it goes to print, including yellow pages. Any company that can not or will not provide a proof for your final approval should be avoided at all costs.
May 2, 2007 at 9:34 pm #149652tn16ParticipantRon,
We are looking at revamping the whole process of obtaining the files you need for advertisements, this will include making them availalbe in several formats. I will be able to expound more on that in a week or so. If it goes poorly though, we still have plans to make the ads compatible with more systems regardless. Just wanted to let you know I’m working on that one.May 2, 2007 at 10:09 pm #149653Tn02ParticipantThanks Justin, this is something I was also concerned about.
