I’m trying to come up with a polite way to handle a common situation. It seems that many home owners get embarassed at the condition of their carpets, floors, etc. Especially when I’m moving furniture and expose the pile of dirt, dust, etc. that has accumulated. They’ll usually make some sort of coment like “you must think we’re slobs” or “we’re really not dirty people”. I’ll usually respond with a smile and something like “oh, don’t worry, it’s not that bad” or “I’ve seen worse”. I’m not thrilled with either of these responses since, in my opinion, it still leaves the home owner feeling bad.

Does anyone have a more “charming” way of handling this situation – Ideally, I’d like the homeowner to walk away from this conversation actually feeling good.

    Thanks

I would try something like this: I haven’t moved my own couch in at least a year I’m sure my pile is much worse, and this is what I do for a living.

I find that if you can relate it to your own circumstances people feel a lot more comfortable. If you comment on other people’s homes, they still feel like their home doesn’t live up to your own personal standards.

    Good luck!

What works for me and seems to put customers at ease is “If all houses were like this I’d be in Heaven”
