Right now I have a regular flip phone. Was thinking about getting one of them computer phones like a palm or blackberry or somethin. Sounds like it would be good for business stuff like checking email, booking appointments and I even heard some of them are actually compatible with Quickbooks. I know very little about these phones and am quite computer illiterate. Can any of you guys out there make any recommendations?
February 9, 2008 at 10:47 pm #151513AnonymousInactiveI have a palm treo 755. Honestly I love it and it’s the best ivestment ever. For me it is convienant because I don’t have business hours. I answer 24/7 when ever a customer calls. Although I don’t always have my paper schedule. So if I am out at dinner, or riding the motorcyle or wherever I dont have the schedule I can take the call and still booking the appointment.
For me being that accessible to my customer and answering at times when everyone else is closed has landed me quite a few jobs. Without having a smart phone I would not have had my schedule and would not have aswered therefore not having another customer.
On the downside if you do get a smartphone learn from my stupidity. I had a HTC smartphone, DO NOT GET. It was garbage. I had to get a new phone every 30 days to the day because it would crash until they traded it for the palm. But the moral is I relied on my original smartphone and never backed up some appointments. When it crashed I lost the ones I dodn’t have saved on my computer or written down. So always have a backup somewhere.
Hope this helps.

I had a MDA phone, but I didn’t like having the phone and pda together. I guess I’m technologically old fashioned.

February 16, 2008 at 1:10 am #151518HBPuyallupParticipantI have the xv6800 smart phone from verizon wireless I have had it since the end of December of 07. I do love it. I got ride of my paper appointment book and currently keep two different calendars on it for the two vans. I then can link the calendar to outlook and print to schedule for my techs then it is back up. I do have to link the phone to it everyday. Which it a little bummer. It takes about 5 minutes to do. I can listen to music that goes through my blue tooth and customers don’t even know. That’s just an added perk. The only problem that I have had with it is the cord that I used to link up the info to my computer went bad some how.

Everything is better, except the price…I would gladly sell you mine and my wife’s. She hates hers as well and only used a month. I am going to list on EBay…cheaper is not…repeat..NOT always better.

thank youJuly 8, 2008 at 9:18 pm #151523AnonymousInactiveOk, I had to chime in on this one as my wife has a blackberry and I have an iPhone. She has used both my phone as well as hers and here is our run down of the two. I LOVE my iphone! I can schedule all my jobs (in the summer I have 3 vans running) on the iphone and sync it to my computer at night when I get home. The synch take approx 2-3 minutes to complete. All vans get a copy of their schedule in the morning. I also get all my email, which I even have some of my customers email when they need something cleaned and I respond, add it to my ical, all from my phone. Another plus is that using the maps on the iphone (or GPS on the new one) is very helpful. We also sync all our contacts from Quickbooks onto the iPhone so if a phone number is ever needed we have it. Then the music is also a bonus. Surfing the web on the iPhone is a breeze but with a blackberry it is a nightmare as you can’t adjust the size of the screen. My wife is getting rid of her blackberry this Friday when the new iphone comes out. Here is a new tip for the new iphones. There is a new feature called MobileMe. What it will allow us to do is we can have 2 iPhones and if anything is added onto either iPhone or the computer it will update all three devices. This will cost an extra 99.00/yr but we think it will be VERY helpful in scheduling jobs. Hope this helps.
