September 28, 2005 at 10:37 pm #145310AnonymousInactiveShaw and Mohawk may start only honoring warranties if the carpet is cleaned by an IICRC certified cleaner (and hot water extraction?). Basically they are trying to get customers to use professional cleaners to clean their carpets at home. I imagine they hope this will eliminate them from warranty issues caused by improper use of home steam cleaners, “Rug-doctors”, and the “I’ll clean anything for $69 and leave you with wet carpet for 48 hrs” cleaners. Policy won’t start till 2008, so if you are not an IICRC certified technician, you have plenty of time to become one. Once you are certified, it is easy to get your business certified. Myself, my brother, and our 1 other employee are all IICRC certified. I highly recommend getting certified if you are not. Plain and simple, you will learn something in the class that you didn’t know before. The class is comparable to the training everyone received from Cody, but does go further in some areas. As for whether or not it has to be the “hot water extraction” (HWE)method of cleaning for the warranty, that is debatable in my opinion. Their websites say they “recommend” HWE, but doesn’t say it has to be HWE. I won’t get into the whole HWE argument here. Besides, if anyone ever asks us, we do do HWE (we have a ninja), but then give them the pros and cons and sell them on the bonnet after that.

Most homeowners void the warrenty by themselves because they don’t do the things that are required to be covered. Clean every X months, spot cleaning, vaccuming, ……………………..
Heck, some probably dont even have or know were the paper work is. ❗
So, the new mill guidelines don’t worry me..
October 23, 2005 at 10:51 pm #145312AnonymousInactiveMost of the carpet warrantys are not worth the paper they are written on. Look at all the exceptions and conditions. Most people void the warranty after 6 months. I have at least 5 customers that submitted warranty claims were denied for one reason or another. Some were just blown off by the carpet mills and were never contacted.
October 24, 2005 at 2:41 am #145313AnonymousInactiveYeah, the warranties are a joke. I’ve had 5 or 6 customers tell me that they tried to submit a claim and where denied.

I know what they want you to ask custumers prior to inspecting problems with their carpet. They, the carpet mills, point the finger at the consumer 99% of the time. They want the inspector to ask ?’s like. How often had you had your carpet cleaned? “I clean it regularly, a few times a year.” Oh, that is too much. Or, “I haven’t had it cleaned yet.” Oh, that could be the problem it is matting and oversoiled.
If the carpet is not flawed from the manufacture, for example: a low row, a discoloration, some sort of delamination, could even be the wrong color or style. They won’t touch it. Percentage wise the more I think about it, it is greater than 99% if you think about the volume of business they do world wide. Since he bought most of the market, Bob Shaw is always looking for more ways to make more money & this is one other.
