Help please. I have always used the plastic steamer on red dyes. It is out of order now and wanted to ask those of you that have used the iron and towel method, do you use a damp towel with the iron or a dry one? And, should the steam setting be on low or high?

    Thanks

    Dan

The Namco steam iron has been replaced with a metal fitting that will fit onto the base of most irons that you buy in the store. Seems like a better fix. I have the namco and it has been ok, but I can see myself replacing it within a few months. As for the iron and towel method, I would use a towel that is wet, so that more steam is created. Also, use the lowest setting. Too much heat will singe it, especially olefin carpet. Hope this helps.

    Nope
Use a dry towel and lowest steam setting.

Listen to the dirtbag. He may be from Canada eh, but he knows of what he speaks. Definitely use caution on olefin too as stated.

Sorry, for us I always use a damp towel. The more steam the better. We still use the cheap plug in irons from the old days. I sometimes have two or three going on at the same time. I just make sure that I am paying attention. I also use a damp towel on taking out wax.

    Greg,
I have found that a hair drier works great for removing wax. Warm it up and blot w/ a towel.

I was wondering what you used a hair blower for

Hmm, Wise guy. Obviously not for the few hairs on my head, but you should see the “no-mow” on my chest!!!

So most of you guys are using __________ on the carpet to loosen the red stains? And then you use an iron and a wet or dry towel to transfer it?

The drier the red spot the better. I test part of the red spot with pro-spotter to see if it will come out that way. Maybe another part of the spot with TGP depending on what it is to see if that does anything and flush. If those don’t work, I dry those spots as best I can, and then mix equal parts A and B of the red dye remover, mist it on the spot and apply iron/towel as stated above.
