I am wondering how much everyone goes out in the truck. Do most operators clean everyday?

How many of us are actually owning a business vs. how many of us are owning a job?

Michael, I probably go out on the truck an average of 4-6 hours per week. We are fortunate to have two very hard working employees that go out in our 2 service vans. I have moved into more of a management role for my business. I go out and do estimates, trouble shoot specific problems, Keep equipment in good shape, do ongoing training with my employees, etc. I came by my current role through an accident, but it has actually been the best thing that ever happened to me. I would encourage you and all operators to have the goal of getting themselves out of the van and in a management type of role. Your body will thank you!

    Bryan,
Thanks! Breaking a leg, I can’t imagine that. I fractured my heal once (I was actually asking a girl on a date, door bell ditched her apartment, and jumped from the balcony to get away faster, she eventually married me, so it was worth it).

But would you be able to answer any of my questions I asked on this post? – viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2119

    Thank you so much!

    Michael,
I am replying to renew this post. I too would like to see more operators vote on this post. Coming from a 10 year operator, getting the owner out of the truck and into the management position is critical in creating a more valuable and successful business. We will all need to do this eventually as our bodies wear out so why not get there sooner to maximize our potential.

My first year in business I immediately started training all my techs to handle everything in the business minus phone sales. I have a manager that can run phones however on top of that he can completely run my company if I were to get hurt, sick , etc. It’s 100% worth the hard work it took to not only have all my employees be able to run a van, but also get them more involved with my company instead of me training a tech just to vacumn for example. As far as me working out in the field I’m passionate about the hands on approach with employees and customers. . I’m on site six days a week on average and my advertising is 147$ a month and we’re doing 9-15k months except in January and February is our slower times.
Hope that helped you out with my simple feedback.
    Thanks

Up until recently I’ve only had 1 employee available to me on weekends, so I went out in the truck with him on saturdays. That’s the only day of the week that I actually do any cleaning. Monday – Friday I answer phones, give quotes, and try to stop by most of the jobs to shake hands with the homeowners. They seem to appreciate it, and it gets me out of the house which my wife appreciates.

I definitely bought into this company as an investment and never intended to be cleaning carpets myself. So I focused on hiring and training great crew members from the start. It has worked out pretty well for me.

I have 2 vans and 4 employees. I hardly ever go out and do cleanings anymore.
