Does anyone know if we still have the 2 different protectors. I was on the hb store and I can only find the one. I would swear that there was a water based protector also. I like selling the protector but I cant stand the smell of the stuff, I feel like I am going to die everytime I spray it. I would rather have a water based protector even if it takes alittle bit longer to dry. Please help

Has anybody tried the water based protector, and if so what do you think about it. Ive heard that water based protectors are better for the carpet than solvent based or silicon based. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

    Brett,
Our water based protectant was a teflon. If it froze it would not remix and had to be thrown away. We had it on our price list for more than two years and the number that were ordered was so low that we discontinued the product over a year ago. The cost to the operators was more than double our regular protector. All things considered we did stop producing the product.

Hey Cody, Thanks for the quick response. Ive been having a hard time selling our protector over the last couple of months. I have always been into selling the prot. but when I start selling alot of it I start to think breathing all this prot everyday cant be good for me so I stop selling it. Then a couple months go by and start selling it again but will again stop soon after because of the odor. Please help me Cody, I love what protector does for the carpet and I could probally sell it on 95% of my jobs but I just dont think that we should be breathing it on a daily basis.
Let me know what you think. Thanks again for all your help and support over the last 9 years

    Brett,
There are a few things that you can do for the smell of the protector. First off make sure that you have some good air flow in the area you are protecting. You can open a window or two for a few minutes. Odorless mineral spirits is a main part of the dispersing agent used in the protector. It is in the solvent family, but is one of the safer ones. It will evaporate off quickley. Opening the windows will help bring fresh air making the parts per million of the solvent very low. If the protector agitates your breathing, you may want to wear a painters or surgical mask while you spray the protector. A full resporator mask comes with the tile and grout package. It looks like a gas mask, but will be very effective in filtering out the solvent as it evaporates. Plenty of fresh air and the painters or surgical mask would be adequate.

    Brett,
I buy paper respirators, and use them while I vacuum.
Good quality ones with 2 bands (straps) only cost about $22.00 for a box of 20.

All good points! It’s funny as we get a little older, we’re not as self-conscious about what we look like – but actually consider protecting ourselves! 🙂 We see people outside using masks for allergy protection – we are in ‘cedar’ season – right Rick? We should always be cautious about repeated exposure to any chemicals!!! Air – it’s what’s for dinner!! haha!

Bet that makes the home owner feel good seeing you, with a mask on in their house.

    Not a problem.
Everyone understands when you have allergies.

As far as wearing the mask while applying stain guard:
Again, it won’t bother them when you tell them that you apply it 6 times per day, 5 or 6 days a week. However, I do ask that elderly and ill people are not in the room while it is being applied.

I guess Im having a hard time understanding why we arent using a protector that isnt toxic. They have tones of different protectors out there that are non-toxic. I personally dont want to wear a mask when Im doing anything in peoples houses. I have 2 small kids and if I saw a guy spraying something on my carpet that is supposed to remain on the carpet after it dried, and he was wearing a breathing mask i would tell him to stop.
Opening windows does help but when its cold outside people dont want windows open.

How long does it take for the protector to fully cure? Or, how long have you all been advising your customers to stay off the carpet after you apply the product? I have been telling my customers 4 hours, with ventilation. I don’t remember where I got that number from.

    Thanks, Rick
