Tyler: I am grateful for all the tech info that you gave in our last newsletter. I recently attempted to install the new Norton 2006 antivirus program and when I did it crashed the computer. I had a professional computer company clean up the mess and was informed that they have seen this happen numerous times. Something about the Norton 2006 program is not compatible with Window “Home” XP edition. It cost me $120 to correct everything. The Norton folks even admitted that this is happening to my computer people. They refunded my purchase price but would not pay for the repairs.
Just wanted to give my 2 cents worth.

I usually run Pro version of XP, but when helping other it will be nice to know that its a known problem.I personally use a university version of the symantec client (norton). It is very basic with no bells and whistles, but gets the job done.
January 14, 2006 at 12:35 am #145654Bigmatt1957Participanti have no problems with my product i use from symantec the parents of norton nore did i have any problems running ealier versions of norton on my window xp home laptop or desktop my guess is that the new norton 2006 is using 64 bit software to keep up with the newer hardware product that now have 64 bit tech
as for my i been using symantec secruity client antivirus and firewall love it the best i ever used
if you computer is older i suggest reading the side of the box to find out if you meet the min requirements for newer software
mcafees is a choice as well as zonealarm it free and i know some of my friends use it since its free and they keep everything up to date
i now have to say may it was not norton to crash your pc but maybe it just exposed something that was allready wrong

and download their program for home use.
It’s FREE and effective. I have been using this for the last 4 or 5 years, and have not been to the repair shop for any virus or worm since I have installed it.
As I said, it’s FREE. What have you got to loose?
It automaticaly updates almost everyday. All you have to do is update your registration once a year. They will send you a reminder.
And before you ask, NO they won’t pester you with solicitations.
It’s the greatest thing since fire was invented…..April 3, 2007 at 5:02 pm #145656tn16ParticipantFor a free solution that isn’t a resource hog, try Clamwin

Definitions are updated often, it integrate also with outlook, and overall has worked well for me. Remember you will still need a firewall to go along with this as it does not have one built in. It also has no “live” protection, files need to be scanned to find a virus.
Norton is hard on your computer if you don’t have a lot of processing power to go with it. I would almost double the minimum requirements if you don’t want to get bogged down. Both norton and mcaffee are great once you have them set to behave the way you want them to instead of vice versa.

But if your using Windows, it has a built in firewall.
The Avast program works well with Windows, and has live protection.
In addition, if you put a disk into one of your drives, you can manually check it with Avast before opening the files on it. -
