    I spoke with a manager of an AMC theater. He told me the national average for carpet cleaning is .06/sq. ft. The cleaning on the seats is $1/chair. If anyone else has cleaned movie theaters I could use a little input.

    i would pass on the .06 a sqft. you’ll find that most theaters are very dirty plus the constant mixing of solutions will be time consuming. you have to make it worth your time.

    I clean for a local theater. What i usually do on big jobs is charge by the hour not the sqft. I walk through and figure how many hours each section will take me and i times that by 150.00 per hour. I have cleaned alot of places for pretty cheap psqft but i am still making 150.00 per hour. Hope this helps!!

    I’d be curious to know where he got that number, sounds like something a one pass wand dragger would charge. I haven’t done any theaters, but I would imagine they are pretty dirty. It all depends on how dirty it is. Like someone else said, calculate the time it will take you and base your bid on that.

    Apples & Oranges, I love it!

    Does AMC charge average prices? Do they only pay average for the carpet? Seats? Movie screens? Do you only show average movies? Do they use an average mechanic, tax adviser, or doctor? Do they understand that quality isn’t average? Do they drive an average beater? Or do they drive a quality auto? If they only want average and don’t care about quality, well, ask if the carpet and seats were wet for (an average) two days, and smell musty, would that matter?
    I don’t want to work for an average price, I don’t do average work. I didn’t sign up with an average franchise. I’m glad I don’t have an average family, life, or job for that matter.

    You hit the nail on the head Gordon! If they actually want it CLEANED…. it’s going to have to cost more than .06 per sq ft. Don’t forget the scam video we watched at training with a carpet cleaner merely spraying water on the carpet in Houston. Low price will get you low results. You get what you pay for…. When’s the last time they gave us a 25 cent movie pass?? Probably not since 1945…..

    6 cent/sf is what they pay nationally. Big Co. units all over the place.

    I would never clean for 6 cents. The cheapest I’ve ever cleaned was for a maid service that sub-contracted me to clean an office. Their normal rates were 12 cents. I agreed to that price to get my foot in the door. Took me 3 hrs. for $95. Everyone loved my work and understood how I can justify charging 20 – 30 cents. They want to continue using me at MY PRICES! My advice is to don’t give in too quick to these cheapies. I would rather spend the time trying to land new accounts, cleaning and maintaining equipment, brewing up advertising strategies, or just relaxing. 6 cents would be a loss no matter how big the job is.

    Don’t forget the amount of time it takes to remove all that ABC gum. Fun times with that all squished in the fibers. I lost my local theater carpet job to another that had to drive 50 miles and do the work for 10 cents. I was charging 14 cents plus gum removal.

    I’m with Brett I have a dollar per hour I want to make and I don’t see any reason to lower my rates.

    Hey guys,

    I just now stumbled onto this posting and find these cheap skates pretty halarious. $.06 per square foot! Bob Gatch in the county next to me here was working on the golden corral account and the guy there said we are too expensive because the guy he has “cleaning” his carpet now is only charging $.04 per sq. ft.

    I think it is hilarious how these theater and restaurant owners think they are getting a good deal paying so little when they aren’t even getting a $.04-$.06 job done. They are basically paying someone to come make the carpet smell and wear it out quicker. Doesn’t make a lick of sense to me and I can’t help but laugh when someone tells me something like this.

    I think Gordon said it best, I’m going to tell that to the next business that tells me I’m too expensive.

    You’re right about the restaurant biz. I clean for one restaurant here (only because I know the owner pretty well), but other than that I have no interest in that line of work…

    I quoted $900 for a Sleep Inn, halls and steps cleaning. The owner called saying that he had a quote for $75 less from the largest carpet cleaner in the area (CC w/17 vans). I caved in and did the work for the few bucks less. The maids were all impressed.

    I took the Manager around on a final tour and she said that it was certainly a much better job than CC had done 3 years ago and the carpet was not buckled. What? They had the suction side so high, it literally pulled the carpet from the concrete, and the carpet buckled down a hall and had to be replaced.

    So, I did a better job, no hassles than the competitor…for his pricing!

    I have done work for them since with rooms, etc, but I will not lower my prices again to meet competition…unless it makes sense, like it did the first time to get my foot in the door.

    Almost all of our commercial customers have had many different cleaners in over the years and have received the same job…poor. Once we get in the door, do our thing, prove our worth so to speak, they are hard pressed to go back or rather down to the other guys.

    I agree with Gordon…however, all the customer has previously seen is average or below results and when they see what we do, they will pay more.
