I was working in Arizona last week and met up with a new operator. We started talking about marketing and how to do it. Marketing is as easy as you make it out to be. The #1 rule is to ask. The worse they can do is say no. Don’t assume they already have someone and you are to late. We met at a super 8 motel and went out to work on a job. The night before when i checked in about 11pm I asked who cleaned the carpets. The desk clerk informed me that they do it in house. I was surprised because the carpets looked pretty good. beside some edging with a vacuum I would say they looked great. I noticed that they excepted dogs. He said that they try to clean after every pet just in case. He gave me his bosses name and said she would be in the morning. When we got back to the hotel the next day I asked to speak to her. Apparently I made a good first impression the night before, because she was expecting me. We chatted for five minutes and then she was asking about cleaning the entire hotel, her house, her sisters house, and other super 8 in the area. This should bring in 6-10k a year in business. I was very happy to have shown a new operator how to market his business. Once again the worst thing to happen is that they say no. The entire cost in advertising was $69 that was the cost of my room for the night and that includded a free breakfast.
