I am almost done with my web page and want to start an adwords account. I was hoping we could get a thread going of consisting of ad words that are working, not working and so forth.
I realize that the research comes at a price but I am hoping people will still be willing to share.
If you don’t know what adwords are, Adwords for Dummies is a great resource. I would like this thread to focus on adwords researched and tried, tips and even adwords that had a dismal ROI (different things work in different areas) I do not want it turned in to a tangential discussion of what adwords are or how they work. That can go in to a different thread and only requires about 5 minutes of internet research.
The words I plan to bid on are :
“environmentally friendly carpet cleaning”
“carpet cleaning”
“dry carpet cleaning”
“red spots on carpet”
“commercial carpet cleaning”
“residential carpet cleaning”
“carpet protection”
“carpet cleaning better business bureau”
“low moisture carpet cleaning”I want to try and stay away from anything that is steam clean or HWE based…..anyone else?
July 20, 2008 at 7:36 am #152376AnonymousInactiveI wouldn’t target any of those keywords. I would target on all the main keywords people actually type into Google like:
carpet cleaning Washington
carpet cleaning Tacoma Washington
carpet cleaners Tacoma
carpet cleaning (all surrounding cities)
upholstery cleaning (with all the variations)You want to narrow it down to your specific area. Whatever you do…DO NOT bid on just “carpet cleaning”. You will find that if not watched this keyword will run up a huge bill real fast.

Although they are not searched as much as “carpet cleaning” you will be able to bring in a comparative number of visitors that are more likely to convert to leads. You can also bid on mispelled words. Use caution though because mispelled words can also cost more than real words. But something like
“upolstery cleaning tacoma”
might be a good keyword to have in your list.

Steve and I have been with Google Adwords for a few months now and I did a short assessment of what was working for us.
I agree with the post on adding your city to the end of carpet cleaning
(ex. carpet cleaning Washington) and all the variations that go with it,
that is one thing that does work for us. See it is our experience that throwing out the word “carpet cleaning” does get hits, but for us, it makes for alot of competition and paying the highest price for the bid. By adding our county, and city to the ends of these keywords, has eliminated alot of competition, lowered our cpc (cost per click) and from what I understand may have boosted our quality score a bit. We have done alot of research on this and are still tweaking on a daily basis, however we too bought the book adwords for dummies and the other one Entrepreneur Magazine’s Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords. There is a 3rd book also, but I can’t seem to find the name, I’ll post it when I find it. These 2 books are very good resources (at least for us) As I said we have alot of information we are always available by phone or email also. But will stay close to this post to see what others have come up with. We have several campaigns going, with lots of ad groups and keywords and are always looking for different ones ourselves. One thing that does NOT work is the words “carpet” by itself, “cleaning” by itself this we found out the hard way 🙁 I know that some of the State owners have been using Google Adwods for a while maybe they will post some helpful information on here. Hope this helps.August 2, 2008 at 3:20 pm #152379AnonymousInactiveThe 3rd book was The Definitive Guide to Google AdWords. by Perry Marshall (we don’t have this one yet)
The Ultimate Guide and Adwords for Dummies we purchased via Amazon.com (used, but in mint condition) and received both for $25 including shipping. Maybe if you search for all 3 you can get an even better deal. ThanksApril 16, 2009 at 4:37 pm #152380Bret WootonParticipantAd words for Dummies is also a pretty good resource. Don’t forget, there seems to be a ton of help just from your Ad words account page and on you tube.

April 28, 2009 at 1:26 am #152382AnonymousInactiveI second what Justin posted, Google is great at telling you what you need if you just take the time to look. The key to Adwords is testing, start with a couple of your primary keywords, for example cityname carpet cleaning, carpet cleaning cittname and cityname carpet cleaners, carpet cleaners cityname.
Make up your first ad and use your primary keyword in your ad, for example: “CITYNAME CARPET CLEANING”
Cleanest Carpets Ever!
Dry in about an hour
http://www.yourwebsite.comrun this ad for about 2 weeks and try to be in the 2 to 4 position and then make one small change like instead of the dry in about an hour line, change it to say something like same day service and then run the ad again for a couple of weeks and track the results.
If you continue to do this you will improve your quality score and that will in turn reduce your cost per click and also improve your position.
The key really is to tack the results, don’t waste your money using a service as they are just going to do the same thing and it will cost you more money.
Google Adwords is easy if your willing to take the time to learn and test it.
Remember though no matter how good you get with Adwords you are still better off with organic rankings so that should be your primary focus online.
