So I cleaned some really beat up berber today. Most of the stains came out but as I was raking I noticed some of my footprints wouldn’t come out with the rake. I took a closer look and it should have been fixed with the rake because they weren’t dirty spots, but the rake wouldn’t take them out. I finally had to take out our stiff bristled brush and use it as a rake. It took out most of the footprints, I was wondering if anyone else had run into this and how did they fix it.

Haven’t run into that one yet….. might check what kind of sole is on your shoes though. Should only use completely white-soled tennis shoes – which are getting harder to find these days! Sometimes the darker colors or dirt in your shoe soles can cause problems. On really light carpets, or when you have a long distance from the truck outside, dirt etc, it is a good idea to use “booties” !

Thanks Jeff. You’re probably right. It didn’t look like dirt though and I checked my soles when I bought them and they don’t leave streaks. I should just start to wear the booties like you said. Thanks again

One of my favorite techs, my nephew, was wearing these “retro” blue Nike shoes, they were leaving behind an imprint. 😳 They first noticed this on white carpet, who knows how long this had been going on. He used booties for the remaining of that day and now wears proper footwear.

Rake; we use a double-headed rake (comb/brush), one works great when raking berber.

    Laura,

where did you get that rake? it would be nice to have something that worked better on berber.

    Everyone,

What type of shoes do you guys where?

I wear a NIKE tennis shoe w/ a court sole. Leaves minimal print and less slippery when you leave the carpet and step onto a hard surface floor.

I normally wear neutral white or tan sole shoes, which wont streak either. In the colder months I like to wear Khaki pants, but on a occasion have worn blue jeans (only when the laundrys piled up). I noticed blue spots on a carpet I was raking one time when I realized my blue jeans were bleeding off on the carpet. The color did come out, thankfully it hadn’t dried, I’ve decided to stick to khaki’s from now on. Just a little food for thought.

    Joel,

that used to happen to me when I was installing carpet. I would buy a new pair of carharts and if I didn’t wash them beforehand I would get blue streaks all over the carpet.

the bottom of my shoes are grey and when I bought them the shoe salesman even took the shoe and wacked it on their waxed floor to see if it would leave a mark. A couple other shoes did but the ones I bought didn’t mark the floor at all. I wonder if mixed with our cleaner, my shoes do mark the carpet. Can our cleaner pull the color our to the soles of our shoes? 🙄

We also use a rake that has a brush instead of a rake on the end. We keep both in each van. It looks just like the ones that HB has but the bristles are black, softer, and there are alot more of them. This also works great on area rugs and high end thick carpet. You know the ones that look like a cat scratched the carpet instead of being groomed.
I have seen the double sided ones that laura was refering to, but opted for the seperate rake instead. My guys are ruff on the rakes. I get mine from a local janitorial company and I only buy the head. It is the same handle as the other rake. If you can’t find it locally try online under carpet cleaning supplys. They are not hard to find and well worth the 10-20 bucks.

Hi guys. We’ve always used black soled addidas with the shell toes. They are comfortable, durable and the shell toe keeps your feet dry. They haven’t left behind marks due to the color of the soles, only if there is soiling on the bottom of the shoes have we seen any marks.

    Mike,

We rake most berber jobs. We have the two-sided rake (like Greg’s) one side has a black-brush that works great with low-pile berber that has been matted. For long shag-berber we use the HB comb-like side.

Wow, I’ve got to get one of those rakes. If nothing else, it will keep my helper busy while I’m cleaning berber, instead of watching me buff.

    Steve:

It’s great hearing from you! You will like having the additional brush-like rake. With certain carpets the comb-like rake would leave lines that customers didn’t like and would have a hard time getting rid of after the carpet dried. The brush part of the rake takes a bit more effort when raking, but leaves the carpet looking great!

Save me a seat in Vegas:)
