I like to hear the number of operators that are giving away the small spotter bottles. I think it is a great marketing move as it keeps your name in front of customer, and a great customer relations move. Oh, one other thing……they also help prevent people from using any old “cleaner” they can find to clean up a spot. For instance bleach, everyone’s favorite Resolve, Spot Shot, Oxyclean, dish soap, or as one of my regular customers did last night…….brush cleaner, or paint thinner if you will. Now, if she had tried this on paint, oil, grease or something like that I would not be as hard on her. She instead tried it on dog spots. She had run out of our cleaner (we refill them for free once between cleanings if we are in their neighborhood but she lives outside of town so we aren’t around often), and didn’t want to pay the service call fee for 6 dog spots ($90 for regulars, $100 for newbies). Ended up paying the $90 anyway and still has ruined carpet to boot. Oh, and we did give her one of the spot and spill charts (also a good freebie in my opinion) at her first cleaning so that should have also helped if she would have used it. I would have walked her through how to clean it herself, but she was in a huff over the $90. Never underestimate what a customer will try as long as the bottle says “cleaner”.

I personally give away the 8oz. to all of my customers and for larger invoices I’ll give them the 32oz. bottle. It seems to be a much better way of advertising than simply leaving business cards although I leave several of them as well. I think that my customers are shocked when I appreciate them by giving them a bottle of spotter. They seem to have a perceived value worth way more than they cost me. It must be the shiny labeling. 8)

I’ve just begun leaving a 32oz. spotter at every job over $150. If they spend less than that I’ll sell it for a bargain price of $10. My spotters are “lifetime” meaning I’ll refill it during every visit. I feel it’s a great way to keep my name in their home.

I give (or refill if they already have one) all my customers a small 8 ounce spotter bottle. I gave a few of the 32 oz. bottles early on for larger invoices, however, I started wondering if they could significantly delay calling me again by having so much spotter to clean up their spills with. I may be thinking too much about this, but I decided to stay with only 8 oz. bottles.

My business has almost doubled this year. There could be a number of things that has made this possible. One things is that we give the bottle to every customer that has the potential to becoming a repeat customer. So if your moving out of my area sorry. The bottle cost $3.56. I figure that if they use this when their cat vomits they’ll make a clean spot and they’ll see how great the 101 is. Plus it keeps our name if front of them more often. I thinks its worth it. There are some customers however that don’t use it. But that’s okay.
