I did a job two weeks ago for about $400 and the customer said she did not realize it but she ran out of checks so I left her an invoice and yesterday in the mail I received a notice from a local law firm that she has filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy. I am no expert when it comes to bankruptcy law but as far as I understand the process is slow so she must have been working on it long before I worked for her. I feel like I was setup and she never planned to pay. Normally I would have just written the money off and went on with my life but I now feel like I am just being ripped off so I want to know if any of you have any experience or advice for me?.
Thanks!

In my case I’d ask their opinion. It wont cost for their opinion. It’s maddening. You almost want to put a sign in their yard that says “This person is fraudulently dishonest.” There maybe a way to file “Theft of services”. You probably wont get a dime but you’d feel better if her name was in listed in the paper.

I worked late that night to solve their problem and submitted the bill the next day. Within 30 days I received a notice from their bankruptcy attorney indicating I would have to wait in line to be paid if anything was left. Of course, after attorney’s fees and the creditors were paid there was nothing left for 60 other businesses that were owed money. The local management should have known the company was going into bankruptcy and forewarned us all but nope, they said they were not aware of the filing. I made it up by overcharging for the next 3 jobs I did for them after they were bought out by a different national company. I wrote the initial $400 off. Price of doing business. I also have a lien on a property where the owners were going to the bank but never returned. I found out later they left everyone including the city and county with unpaid bills and taxes. I wrote that one off to but there are so many liens on the house it is unsellable. I’ll never see a dime. Unfortunately, it is the price of doing business.
