InactiveI have recently discovered that my competitors, when bidding office jobs with many cubicals, measure wall to wall. I was always affraid to charge for the areas under the file cabinents, ect., but now realize that it is much more time consuming to clean these areas. I will now join the rest and hope to see how you other guys clean 1000 sq.ft. per hour. I just completed a 3000 sq.ft. job (actual footage cleaned, medium soil, many small offices and cubes), 2 guys, 7 hours $800. 3 hrs would have been imposible. Is wall to wall the way most of you measure?

GuestWe also measure the entire areas for both residential and commercial cleaning jobs. It typically takes more time to vacuum and clean around file cabinets, tables, etc. than if they weren’t present at all. This is the justification we always use whenever we are questioned about our measuring techniques, and we are normally questioned no more than a couple of times per year.

ParticipantOne tip I have used from Cody when bidding commercial – measure wall to wall, then subtract a percentage estimate of how much of the floor you believe is “unreachable”. For example, I have done some retail stores where I just clean the main traffic areas and “open” areas around displays. I measured the entire store and estimated that I would only be cleaning about 40% of the showroom floor – so that’s what I charged. Didn’t have to move anything and was able to still earn about $100/hour at .20/ft actual cleaned sq. ft. Turns out this method has also kept me competitive. But each situation has to be evaluated – I would agree that office cubicles would be a nightmare….
