Today we had a yellow spot (looked almost like hi-liter) on white carpet at a job. Pro spotter did nothing to it. After usual gamut of trying our arsenal, we were just going to use a mixture similar to the hydrogen peroxide/ammonia mixutre listed on our cleaning charts as a final step to possibly remove the dye/spot. As soon as I sprayed the yellow spot…..it immediately turned a reddish orange color (you can imagine how big my eyes got). I then went and found the customer and asked what the spot was and she said the inside “stems” of a tulip were wet and dripped the color there. As the spot dried (approx 5 mins), it slowly turned back to the yellow. I flushed and red dye treated and nothing happpened. I then flushed again and sprayed with the H Peroxide/ammonia mixture again and the spot instantly turned back to the bright reddish/orange. Slowly, as it dried the spot faded back to the yellow. Anyone ever encountered anything like this? We’ve had spots change colors before, but with over 12 years experience between my employee and I, we’ve never seen anything like this. Customer said she only used soap (dish soap?) on the spot.

Often what I will do at this point is spill a cup of coffee next to the original stain and then remove it. It will deflect the focus.Oh yah, and I have found that customers usually lie about the toilet bowl cleaner or what ever stupid thing they used on their spot before you arrive. Not often that “credible”

We have cleaned numerous times for the customer, and she was not at all mad. She got as much of a kick out of it as we did and was happy to contribute to our “tale for the bar” as she put it. I don’t know of any bars that cator to carpet cleaners or have open mic night for our gripping carpet spinster tales……hmmm, maybe there is another business opportunity here….
I agree that they are often not truthful in what they apply to the spots, but I believe her. Even if she lied, I still don’t know what she could have put on it to make it do what it did. She’s an older woman living alone and no pets.
