I know I read about this in the past, a customer asked me if I had a scanner to read her upholstery bar codes before I clean. I said that I did not. She said then I do not want it cleaned at this time! I told her I would look into this and she agreed not to call someone else just yet. Her concern was the unknown, and I can see her point.

I’ve taken an upholstery class through IICRC and I’ve never heard of this before. What information does she think you’ll find out from the bar code? By law, furniture makers are not required to tell you the fabric content of the furniture, rather only the makeup of the cushion filling. Don’t know what she expects you to find out from the bar code on the tag. About the only information you may sometimes find on tags are the “x”, “s” and “w” which only tell you the stability of the dyes used (and subsequently they recommend a particular style of cleaning for that code). If you (and she) are still concerned, find the manufacturer of the furniture and call them and see what, if anything, the bar code will tell you.

Wow! That is a new one! I also would be interested to see if there is anything to this. Honestly, I doubt it. Probably just a standard inventory tracking code with model, style, manufacturing info, and that’s about it. Might ask her if she believes in UFO’s too! hahahahahahaha
