We have a client who wants carpet repaired on her stairs where her cat has shredded the corners. Can repairs be done on stairs or would it cause a big headache if the carpet was laid in one piece rather than by individual stairs.

    Got any answers? 😕

This repair could be hard. It all depends on your level of experience. If they have enough carpet to replace an entire stair it can be done. A patch on the corners will not last long. If it is one piece of carpet for the entire length I would cut the carpet in the crease of the stair. Remove damaged piece. Make sure tack strips are still good. Use the old carpet for a template and cut new carpet. Start at the top and secure carpet into tack strip stretch down the face and secure to tack strip. Use carpet stapler and secure. A carpet stapler uses narrow staples and hides them well. I hope this Helps

The client said she had a remnant, but I’m afraid that it’s not big enough to do the whole staircase. We have only done minimal repairs so I’m wondering if it’s even worth it to try or if we should refer her somewhere else on this one. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how bad it is when we get there!

    Thanks for the input!

unless you have some prior expertise, refer out.but one step or two is easy to replace,if you know to what to do.

If you find that you have to refer it out I recommend tagging along to watch. Be up front with the repair man and tell him you want to see how it is done. I learned most of my repairs on my own, but I have learned quite a few tricks from some of the old timers in the business.

I am going to try this, I had a lady last week ask me to do some repair work that is beyond anything I have done so far. I made a deal with a local guy that agreed to teach me as we do the job.

Day after tomorrow, we are going to be cleaning an empty parsonage that has some wrinkles in the carpeting. The customer was elated that we would be able to handle them, without going to someone else. Dan is IICRC Certified in repairs.

Nice extra pop on a job.

They never even asked the cost…they just want it done right. We had cleaned before for them.

Have a great week and month.

Its good to see that some of you have started doing more repairs. I agree with Greg about the replacing the one stair. Using the old one as a template is the perfect idea. I had done stairs before and I first staple under the lip first then use the knee kicker, I really don’t like to use it, to install the rest on the piece. I have found out with using the old piece as a pattern put nails or something through 4 corners so it doesn’t slide. Then you can either cut it the the knife or use your scissors.
