ParticipantI have an employee that continually smells like B.O. I have joked about it with him and he doesn’t get the hint. He’s a great employee and takes pride in his work, but he smells horrible. Ultimately I thinks his is lazy when it comes to personal cleanliness. This needs to be fixed. I don’t want to hurt his feelings or embarrass him. He has been with me for a little over a year. I don’t know what to do. Suggestions please.

InactiveI had the same problem. I tried every possible angle to let him know about the problem without hurting his feelings. I even supplied a kit with cologne, mouthwash, etc. . . . never got used. I finally had to be painfully blunt with him. Message received, no more problem.

InactiveHey Matt in my supervising career at the paper mill I ran into this situation more than once, take him aside and be very honest with him he will appreciate your honesty. You need to explain to him WHY it is important that he present himself as a clean and dedicated employee, because a customers first impression last a life time. No money for you no money for him so to speak.

ParticipantThanks for the quick responses I have thought of that but he doesn’t take bad criticism very well meaning he gets mad and would yell at you if you weren’t his boss. I will have to do the talk. That’s is what everyone is saying.

InactiveHey Matt, Running employees is not an easy task by any means, and I completely understand were your coming from by not wanting to hurt his feelings. You do have to remember you are running a business which means sometimes you have to put your personal feelings behind and use your business feelings. Just tell him the truth and say no hard feelings its just business. Most people understand this term from hearing it on movies so much. I feel for you man. Hope this helps.
