Friends,
Happy New Year to all. I have been cleaning now just over a year and as yet, have not felt the need to use finishing pads or finishing towels in my cleaning. What are the benefits? What am I missing? Are they meant to pick up the last of the dirt or to dry out the carpet or both?
January 21, 2008 at 5:41 pm #151338AnonymousInactiveIn my opinion, both. I always use a thin white pad when cleaning after I have used my mainstays (BBC, and either green turf or woven). Shows the dirt well and lets you know if you need another pass. The towel is a must on heavy traffic areas, dog oil spots and berbers. You will be AMAZED at what it gets up even after your other pads appear to be fairly clean. If your customer sees it, they will freak out at the amount of dirt. Just don’t let them continue to watch as with some really dirty carpets, you could be there for hours running towels over it and would still get dirt out on the towel.

The dirty words you can see him eat!…January 24, 2008 at 2:36 am #151341HB2003ParticipantI use the finishing towels on most of my jobs anymore. As stated, even though you can’t visibly see the dirt, it is amazing what those towels pick up. Plus, it gives me piece of mind knowing that there is all of that dirt that was not left behind in the customer’s carpet… 🙂
January 31, 2008 at 1:33 am #151342GA18ParticipantGuys, Thanks for the feedback. With the use of the pad or towel, do you use them until you come up clean? Seems as if you may be there for a while. Also, is your towel attached to a pad or attached directly to the head?
January 31, 2008 at 2:18 am #151343AnonymousInactiveI think you’ll find that using a finishing towel will help you bring your residencial jobs to an even better level of clean. As Devlin said, it shows dirt well and lets you know if you need another go at it.
To do this, lay the towel flat on the floor. Place a pad (I use a BBC) in the middle and fold the 4 corners in toward the middle. Place the buffer with your regular drive plate on and buff away. Make sure there is some moisture left on the carpet or your buffer will really pull and rock as you try to use it.

At a men’s breakfast recently I spoke to a gentlemen who had sold a carpet cleaning business he had owned for many years. What amazed me was he used towels only ,he did not use bonnets at all. Kind of wild .

February 2, 2008 at 10:37 pm #151347GA18ParticipantThanks again for the good feedback. Is it advisable to keep a pad/towel down until it comes up completely clean?
February 4, 2008 at 2:26 pm #151348AnonymousInactiveYou could be there forever if you want a completely clean towel to come up every time. Use your judgement, just like the pads.
February 5, 2008 at 4:41 am #151349NJ05ParticipantUsing towels prior to buffing in some cases will work good. I use regular size bath towels, you can get 4 passes with them. If you spray the towel prior to use it will work good too..What I have found is that if you have to use several towels your better off extracting and then buffing…but who wants to do that!?
April 2, 2009 at 6:24 pm #151350AnonymousInactiveFinishing towels are awesome!
On dirty carpet I start with the big BBC pad, then the smaller white/green pad until “clean” then finish with the towel(s). Comes out looking great!I get GOOD results with FAE, BBC, finish towels.
April 5, 2009 at 7:01 pm #151351AnonymousInactivelike most of you guys and gals i use the towels when i feel the need.that is often though.i have went through every towel in a days work several times.i probably have 25,30 towels. and that is both sides.when i flip them though,i only use the second side for a short time.some of the dirt has already bled through.i use them on furniture also when need is there.
