Some of you in the Southern states may have heard of Mexican tile (Saltillo tile). I posted a little on this in the previous topic. Our corporate office was weary of using our tile and grout products on this particular tile. We have been in contact with a company willing to help. We will attempt to do the job within the next couple of months. Doing some research first. Unless any of you know what works best? I recieved John’s go ahead to use something else besides our product. I’ll post pics when it’s done. We have agreed to clean for .85 psf and to do it every 6 months.

Is the Saltillo tile a new istallation ?or does it have any wax or topical coating already appled ?
Rick MillardGo to google.com and do a search for Saltillo tile. You will see pics of it and find all there is to know. I see it on a daily basis or at least every other day. Saltillo tile is also known as Mexican tile, terrazo tile. Has two or 3 different names. You can buy saltillo tile in the raw form with no wax or glaze on it. Some come with a factory glaze already on it. It is a fairly cheap tile, easy to clean, seal and finish. I have some pics I plan to post after Jason with corporate helps me on that one. I have an e-mail into him already. Send me your e-mail and I will shoot you the pics. Anyone else interested, send me your e-mail. Saltillo may be cheap to buy but is expensive to buy and have installed because the grout tends to be anywhere from an inch to 3 inches thick. A lot of work involved when doing this one because of size of grout but is worth the results and money you can charge. Have you come across it in your area? Let me know. I also see brick floors. John said our hard surface cleaner wouldn’t hurt it but I am wondering if the special products you are using would be a better idea.
The challenge with this type of tile is that it is very porous and absorbs whatever is put on it. I have asked to see if we can get a product that will work effectively to clean and seal, as in this case, the tile is absorbing it as well as the grout. Home Depot does sell products specifically for this type of tile. Adds cost to the job. This tile is very popular down here in the south.
The grout lines in Saltillo tile are usually much wider than ceramic tile. Usually about an inch to as much as 1.5 inches. Cleaning the tile with the HB system usually only cleans the “surface” of the tile. You HAVE to get deep into the grout to clean it properly. I have faced many jobs that I have just flat out refused to clean because they were heavily soiled. With that said, cleaning Saltillo tile will show the “trapped” soil more so than ceramic tile.
