I cleaned an elderly couples mud room this past week, WOW I din’t even bother to clean the pads! Throw them out as soon as I got back to the shop.

I should have taken a picture of them, they were so dirty I think I invented a new color lets call it BLAAAAAAAAAAAACH.

Just yesterday my son, Dan called me and asked for help. He was cleaning a home with 3 black labs. I walked in and almost fainted…the tan carpet was literally black with hair on the carpet. The crpet cleaned up nicely, however a big tip…never, ever clean pads like we got in your washer at home. Use the laundromat and let them deal with the hair left in the machine. I think I ran the washer 6 times afterward to flush out the hair fromthe pads…

Isn’t it amazing the mess some people live in. I often come home, hug my wife and thank her for the way she keeps up our house. I have gotten to where I charge a premium for stuff like that. If they don’t like the rate, it’s ok, because I don’t really want to go back to some of them anyway.

Some of the dirt – nasty pads I’ve ever had has come from restauants. Black grease nasty doesn’t give it the full credit it deserves.

Note: always have (2) two sets of pads. 1) for not so bad carpets and 2) for bad carpets. When you buy new pads they become your #1 and the old #1 pads become your #2 pads. Discard your old #2 pads except the worst one and sent it to Linda at the home office for her judgement. Ha Ha.

    Great tip.
    I follow this practice also.
I cleaned a Panera Bread restaurant last week. It was 670 sq. ft. I went through 16 pads and it took me 3 hours. Those pads are now designated for restaurants only, they aren’t even acceptable for offices or banks.

16 pads per average job??? Those are some big jobs or very dirty ones. Do you use all the types of pads or work through an order? Do you use finish towels too?

    you forget where I live.

I use the woven turf pretty much exlusivly. I’ll use the green strip pad on occasion and I towel traffic areas of hard to clean areas.

The worst pads I have gotten were from a steel fabrication shop. I clean 2 times a year. I first extract the carpets after vaccumming and then buff twice with older pads. They turn black and never lose the grayness even after washing and bleaching twice. Extra charge for the excessive soil. They don’t mind, they love the job I do. I don’t like it so much due to the extra work and soil. I do love the check they write!

16 pads per average job??? At 2-3jobs a day someone is washing a lot of pads in the afternoon and evening Kemo Sabe…happy as a clam in the sand that we only generate 6-9 pads per job. Two to three loads each night.

Ron, I know that every area is different and everyone uses a different procedure but, I can clean 10 3br college apts. and use less pads than that. The pads may have more capacity than you realize or your customers have some incredibly dirty carpet. I average about 15-20 pads for a 3 job day (1500 sq.ft.). It would be a huge benifit if you can somehow reduce the no. of pads used. Thats a ton of laundry!!!!

I guess you underestimate the amount of dirt that a desert has. Seriously, out here just opening your door lets in an enormous amount of dirt. For instance, my wife cleans our granite countertops and 2-3 hours later I can run my hand across the counter and fill my fingertips with that very fine dust. Now imagine someone calling you a year or more later to come out and clean.

My older pads go to the nasty hotels.
